Data Governance
What is Data Governance?
Data Governance is about proactively managing data to help a business achieve its strategy and vision.

It involves people and process activities for managing the quality, availability, usability, integrity and security of the data in enterprise systems. This is normally achieved by having the Policies, Standards and business decision making forums to influence and implement data strategy. It is at the heart of enterprise data management.
What are the benefits of Data Governance?
There are two aspects to Data Governance, defensive and offensive.

Defensive Data Governance is about ensuring the security and safety of data, and to minimise risk. This is needed to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and to safeguard data and users from unauthorised use. In the past, many enterprise Data Governance programmes were established as a defensive model.
Offensive Data Governance is about opportunity and leveraging data assets to increase revenue. It is all about increasing the value to be gained from data, by connecting data and expanding the ways that it can be used.
Why is Traceability important?
From a security, audit and compliance perspective, traceability is essential. Being able to say where data came from, and to clearly identify conformance to policy controls is vital for explaining data.

From a data value perspective, being able to create new Data Products quickly, is essential to be able to leap-frog the competition and become a fully data-driven organisation.
How can Openvue help?
Openvue enables data flows, or data pipelines, to be made visible. This helps govern data, as it is clear what the source of data is, and how it is transformed and used.

By providing a full path of the journey of data, issues can be explained and resolved more easily. Ownership can be defined more clearly and all teams involved with data governance can be on the same page.
